Yibing Wu will be glad he didn’t have to go through qualifying like he did last year and will have fresher legs in the opening week of the US Open. Wu started off the season amazingly well, winning his first-ever ATP title as a 66 underdog, beating Mmoh, Shapovalov, Mannarino, Fritz, and Isner to take the title in Dallas. Since then, however, he’s really struggled. When he transitioned onto the clay, he was clearly uncomfortable on the surface. Wins against Gasquet, Huesler, and Cecchinatto were impressive, but he still went 3-5 on the clay. Fast forward to grass, another surface where he didn’t seem too comfortable. He beat Kyrgios in his first match but lost all his remaining grass matches after that. He’ll be hoping going back on his favorite US hard courts, he’ll be able to make a good run at the Grand Slam.
Dusan Lajovic
Dusan Lajovic hasn’t had the best of times at the US Open in his career, with his best run being back in 2018, when he reached the third round. He’s always been primarily a clay court player, and hasn’t seen too much success on the hard courts in recent years. He did, however, go on a surprising run in Cincinnati, going from the qualifying stages to the round of 16. He beat Hijikata, Kubler, Cerundolo, and Sinner to reach that stage, all as a significant underdog.
