Kudermetova will be hoping to replicate her 2021 run in Abu Dhabi, where she went all the way into the final losing out to Sabalenka 6-2 6-2. Kudermetova has had an odd start to the year, beating Anisimova, Andreescu, Azarenka, Collins and Mertens but losing out to players she should really be beating like Volynets and Begu. She absolutely dominated Mertens in her opening round in Abu Dhabi. Kudermetova’s power and consistency will be key for this match, and will need another good run to retain her points after reaching the final in Dubai last year.
Liudmila Samsonova
Samsonova is currently loving life! She is at her highest ranking, 19, and comes into the quarter-finals after an important win over Krejcikova. She had an amazing season last year, winning three WTA titles (Washington, Cleveland 125k and Tokyo). She has had an average start to the year, losing to Sabalenka, Anisimova and Vekic and before this week only beating Zhang and Paolini. Samsonova can be one-dimensional with her enormous power, and lack of tennis IQ. Facing Kudermetova will be a tough task.
