Maria has been on a storming run recently, getting back into the top 50 after an impressive couple of weeks. She struggled at the start of the year in Australia, but managed to win an ITF title in Pune winning every single match in straight sets. She won every set by three games or more! A couple months later, she dominated the show at Bogota, dropping just one set in her title run. After that she struggled against the top players, but managed a final appearance in Gaiba, and a week later took a set off Iga Swiatek in Bad Homburg. She came into Warsaw with relative low confidence after some disappointing results, but managed to beat Tauson and in the end reached the semi finals before losing to Siegemund where he was a set up. Last week she claimed a $115k WTA title, again winning every single match in straight sets (6-1 6-1, 6-0 6-2, 6-3 6-2, 6-0 6-2, 6-1 6-2.

Leyla Fernandez has struggled to go far in competitions this year, with her best result being a quarter-final appearance at Auckland. She’s put in some impressive performances the past couple of weeks however, beating Pera and Haddad Maia. This week she thrashed Noskova in the opening round 6-0 6-2, and then bagelled Tauson 6-0 before the 20-year-old retired. She’ll be hoping she can carry on this run, and win her first title of the season.
