I’d say for most players ranked inside the top 35, the motivation of trying hard for a tournament just before a Grand Slam is minimal. But for Djere this is different, he made the final last year beating Goffin, Sousa, Kuvler, Gasquet and Huesler before losing out to Mannarino in staight sets. He has points he needs to defend, and I’m sure he’ll be trying his all. He hasn’t won a title since 2020 where he won in Sardinia, so I’m sure he misses the taste of silverware. He’s had chances this year, reaching the final in Hamburg last month, and reaching the semi finals in Kitzbuhel losing out to Thiem.

What a season Alex Michelsen is having! A career high ranking of 133 and it’s only going up from here! He won his first ever Challenger title last month in July, beating Tu, Kovacevic, Nishikori, Shang and Shimizu (a stacked Challenger tournament)! A week later he went on an unbelievable run on the tour, at Newport. He beat Cressy, Duckworth, McDonald and Isner to reach the final before he lost to Mannarino. He’s started off this week well, beating Varillas and Ofner in th eopening two rounds.
