Germany

After a terrible tournament in Russia four years ago everyone expects a much better World Cup for Germans. Four years ago they finished last in the group with Mexico, Sweden and South Korea with only one point. Hans Flick’s team now simply must be much better.

The champion of the World from Brazil in 2014 come to this tournament with a little rejuvenated team but at the same time with a couple of experienced players who will be leaders of this team. Manuel Neuer, Ilkay Gundogan, and Thomas Muller will play their last World Cup, probably and they want to say goodbye in great fashion. They will have a couple of young players to help them, like Lukas Klostermann, Kai Havertz, and Jamal Musiala, with some more experience like Timo Wener, Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich, and Niklas Sule.

Like every time before, Germany qualifies for the World Cup very easy with nine wins in group J with North Macedonia, Romania, Armenia, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. With rivals like Japan and Costa Rica, Germany is the biggest favourite to win this group alongside Spain.

Japan

Four years ago in Russia, Japan manage to go through the group stage and got eliminated in the knockout phase. They want the same results this time again. The difference now is that they got a much stronger group with Spain and Germany and it will be much harder to finish in the top 2 places.

The first round will show how far they can go. If they can make a surprise against Germany they can go into the second round against Costa Rica with a huge ambition to win three points.

The coach Hajime Moriyasy has proven players in his squad who plays in the best leagues in Europe: Maya Yoshida, Takehiro Tomayasu, Ko Itakura, Takefusa Kubo, Reo Hatate, Takuma Asano…

Japan finished Asian Qualifications in second place in group B with 22 points behind Saudi Arabia.

H2H

Their last meeting was in a friendly game in 2006. The result was 2:2.

Prediction

Germany is a big favourite in this game and they want all three points to have a good start to the tournament. But we will escape a bet on a full-time score and go for goals here.
