United have had a miserable start to the new NBL23 season and currently find themselves outside the playoff zone with an unenviable 3-4 record. Things might slightly improve as the season progresses, but we have to be honest and say that Melbourne don´t have a championship-calibre roster this year.
After they unexpectedly beat the Wildcats away from home, it seemed they were about to get going, but that win, surprisingly, produced a countereffect as they lost their next three games. However, in the last round they ground out a massive double OT victory against the Hawks, which should serve as a morale booster.
In that game they were without one of their imports, Jordan Caroline, who will most likely miss today´s game as well. The Perth Wildcats have always been perennial title contenders and teams were even afraid to play them away from home at the notorious RAC Arena. This season, however, things have changed dramatically.
It all started last year with the departure of head coach Trevor Gleeson. He and his brilliant defensive schemes were keeping the Wildcats at the top along with the production of the unstoppable Bryce Cotton. After he left, the Wildcats lost their identity and trademark defense.
This season has been a struggle so far, but Perth are at least inside the playoff zone with a 3-3 record. They suffered a nail-biting home loss at the hands of the Melbourne Phoenix couple of days ago and already lost to United this season.
