Real Sociedad Team News

Competing in the knockout stage of the Champions League for the second time under its current name, Real Sociedad had their chances in the first half at Parc des Princes but failed to take the lead.

Poor conversion of promising opportunities was inevitably detrimental in the French capital, where Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring for Les Parisiens in the 58th minute, before Bradley Barcola broke through past Hamari Traore and finished a quick solo run with a goal through Alex Remiro’s legs.

A two-goal deficit isn’t insurmountable for Imanol Alguacil’s troops, but history isn’t favoring the blue-and-white team, who lost 1-0 to PSG’s league rivals Lyon in the first leg of the round of 16 in the 2003/04 season and suffered the same fate in the second leg.

Form isn’t on Real Sociedad’s side either, as since the defeat in the first leg, followed by a 2-1 triumph over Mallorca, Alguacil’s team has been defeated in three consecutive matches, including a devastating penalty shootout loss in the King’s Cup semifinals to the team they beat just ten days earlier.

Sociedad then suffered a 3-2 defeat to Sevilla in Saturday’s La Liga match, meaning they have only managed one win in their last nine matches in all competitions, with their alarming streak without a home win standing at seven matches since their accidental 2-1 victory over Sevilla in the league in November.

Real Sociedad couldn’t count on the services of key defender Aritz Elustondo, as the 29-year-old was suspended due to accumulation of yellow cards, but he is now eligible to play in Europe.

However, due to a thumb injury, Elustondo was one of six players who did not feature in the defeat to Sevilla, including Martin Merquelanza, Alvaro Odriozola, Aihen Munoz, Carlos Fernandez, and Ander Barrenetxea, although the latter could be ready to return alongside Elustondo on Tuesday.

Alguacil made significant rotations for the match against Sevilla with the second leg in mind, and with the return to full strength midweek, Mikel Merino, Robin Le Normand, Hamari Traore, Mikel Oyarzabal, and Takefusa Kubo are expected to return to the starting lineup.

PSG Team News

Hoping to break the curse of the round of 16 that has haunted them in numerous Champions League tournaments, PSG’s team, still in search of their first European title at the highest level, needs to avoid a catastrophic collapse at the Reale Arena to take another step towards that elusive crown.

While their hosts have had several shortcomings in 2024, the French champions head to Spain with an impressive streak of 20 matches unbeaten to protect, although they dropped points in their last two Ligue 1 games against Rennes (0-0) and Monaco (0-0).

Gianluigi Donnarumma’s interventions were needed on multiple occasions to thwart Monaco’s attacks on Friday night, but despite the action on the pitch, cameras often panned to the stands where Mbappe sat next to his mother after a surprising halftime substitution.

The attacker, soon to join Real Madrid, will experience the Spanish climate on Tuesday when PSG enters the second leg of the Champions League knockout stage with an aggregate lead for the tenth time, but they have only advanced on five of the previous nine such occasions.

Les Parisiens also haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of the 12 Champions League matches away to Spanish teams and famously fell victim to Barcelona’s comeback in the 2016/17 season after a 4-0 first-leg win, but with just two goals conceded in their last six away games, the team led by Luis Enrique, the architect of that historic 6-1 victory, shouldn’t suffer the same fate here.

As for the visitors, Kylian Mbappe was substituted early for the second consecutive time in Ligue 1 on Friday night, and despite this, Enrique revealed that his substitution was purely tactical.

The former Barcelona manager reiterated that his team must “get used to” playing without the 25-year-old, but whether such ruthless decisions from the Spaniard can be sustained until the end of the season is another question, and it would be surprising to see Mbappe demoted to the bench for the second leg.

PSG should also be able to count on the return of Marquinhos, who was rested against Monaco due to a calf issue, but Milan Skriniar, Sergio Rico, Layvin Kurzawa, Danilo Pereira, and Presnel Kimpembe will not be involved.

Additionally, Marco Asensio exited the match against Monaco after just 39 minutes due to a thigh injury, so there is an opening for Barcola, the scorer of the first goal in the initial match, to return to the team.
