Bulgaria Team News

The Bulgarians face their final two games of 2023 with a new coach in charge after parting ways with Mladen Krstajic last month due to “unsatisfactory results” following a nine-game winless streak dating back to November last year. Krstajic’s last game was a 2-0 friendly defeat to Albania, just three days after a disappointing defeat at home to Lithuania, who are ranked 134th in the world. The Bulgarian Football Association announced at the beginning of this month that Ilian Iliev will take over the leadership of the national team.

Bulgaria cannot automatically qualify for Euro 2024 as they are 11 points behind second-placed Serbia with two games remaining, but they hope to end the year on a positive note to try to leave the bottom of Group G and overtake fourth-placed Lithuania, who have played more games.

A total of 21 goals were scored by players in Ili’s 27-man squad, with 10 of them scored by captain Kiril Despodov, who is likely to start on the right wing in attack alongside Preslav Borukov and Spas Delev. Iliev is expected to stick with a 3-4-3 formation, with Kristian Dimitrov, Valentin Antov and Simeon Petrov likely to start in the back three, while Viktor Popov and Ivan Turitsov operate as wing-backs.

Bulgaria midfielder Andrian Kraev will serve a one-match suspension after being shown two yellow cards in last month’s defeat to Lithuania. Therefore, either Ilia Gruev or Filip Krastev could start in midfield alongside Ivayl Chochev.

Hungary Team News

Hungary, on the other hand, are on the verge of qualifying for their third straight European Championship, as they need just one more point from their last two games to secure second place in Group G and secure a ticket to next year’s event in Germany. Marco Rossi’s side have put together a 10-match unbeaten run in all competitions to take 14 points out of a possible 18 to top Group G, one point ahead of second-placed Serbia, but with a game in hand. Hungary achieved a crucial 2:1 victory against Serbia last month.

Hungary should be confident of success on Thursday, having already beaten Bulgaria 3-0 in the qualifiers at home thanks to goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Bálint Vecsei, and Martin Adam.

As for absent players, Willi Orban, Attila Fiola, Laszlo Kleinheisler, Roland Sallai, Barnabas Varga, and Balint Vecsei will miss this month’s international break due to injuries. However, Zsolt Kalmar is available for selection after missing the last qualifier due to suspension, and the Fehervar midfielder will battle it out with Adam Nagy, Daniel Gazdag, and Callum Styles for a place in the starting line-up.

The absence of Sallai and Varga could see Andras Nemeth and Kevin Csoboth get a chance to attack alongside Szoboszlai.

Bulgaria vs Hungary Prediction

Hungary is the clear favorite in this match, and despite the advantage of Bulgaria’s home field, especially because they are playing without an audience, it is difficult for this national team to achieve a positive result, and anything but a victory for the visitors would be a real surprise. Also, a more open match is expected, so our suggestion is to bet on Hungary’s victory, with the addition that at least two goals will be scored in the entire match.
