Where will this year’s Tour de France be held?
The complete route for the 2023 Tour de France was unveiled during the official presentation on October 27th.
The race will start by crossing the border in the Basque region, a return that hasn’t happened since 1992. The early stages will feature a series of challenging and hilly terrains before transitioning to the Pyrenees and entering France.
In total, there will be only 22 kilometers of timed riding, all concentrated in the hilly 16th stage. Additionally, four stages will conclude at mountain summits, including the highly anticipated return of Puy de Dôme after 35 years and an ascent of the Grand Colombier in the Pyrenees.
The mountainous route will deliver an intense final week, culminating in an exhilarating clash from Vosges to Le Markstein during Stage 20.

History of the Tour de France 2023
Jonas Vingegaard is the current champion, winning his first Tour de France in 2022. The Danish cyclist prevented Tadej Pogačar from achieving a third consecutive victory, as the Slovenian previously won the title in 2020 and dominated the race in 2021.
Pogacar ended the Ineos/Sky team’s race dominance, which has won seven of the last eight Tour de France with riders such as Egan Bernal, Geraint Thomas, Bradley Wiggins, and four-time winner Chris Froome. The only other rider to end the British team’s reign was Vincenzo Nibali, then riding for Astana, who took victory in 2014.
The record for the most victories at the Tour de France is held by four people: Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Jacques Anquetil, and Miguel Indurain, each with five titles.
Peter Sagan once dominated the green jersey for the points classification, but in the last three years, his reign has been taken over by Wout van Aert, who has shown dominance across all fields in 2022. Sagan still holds the record for most green jersey wins of all time, with seven wins in nine appearances. Erik Zabel is in second place with six jerseys, while Sean Kelly has four.
In addition to the yellow jersey, Vingegaard also won the red and white jersey for the best driver in the mountain stages in 2022, as Pogačar did the previous two years. Richard Virenque holds the record for the most won red and white jerseys with seven wins. That record is unlikely to be surpassed because Pogačar and Rafał Majka are the only current riders who have won more than one King of the Mountains title, with two wins each.
Pogačar has won the white jersey for the best young driver three years in a row and, at the age of 24, is still eligible for a fourth attempt in 2023.
Who are the participants?
The participants will include defending champion Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and two-time winner Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), along with other prominent contenders. The Slovenian is competing after recovering from a broken wrist in April, while Vingegaard starts racing after a performance at the Critérium du Dauphine.
Among the well-known contenders for the overall victory who will appear at the start in Bilbao are David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), Enric Mas (Movistar), Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe), Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citroën), Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) and Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious).
