Lorenzo Sonego

Lorenzo Sonego has had a difficult year with a 17-20 record. Only in his first year as a professional he had a record of more losses than wins. His two most recent losses on clay against out of form Karatsev and Varillas won’t be acceptable in the Italian’s eyes, but the level both opponents played was very impressive (and this has to of course be taken into consideration).

Sonego will be hoping to replicate a similar run of form the last time he was in Kitzbühel, where he reached the semi finals losing out to eventual champion Dominic Thiem.

Pablo Andujar-Alba

Pablo Andujar comes into 2022 after 20 years of professional tennis. He’s struggled throughout most of 2022, with his most notable wins being against Molcan in the Australian Open and ARV in Rio de Janeiro. However the 36 year old is coming in with some form, reaching the final in Romania’s Iasi challenger – losing out to Meligeni Rodrigues Alves in three sets. Though I won’t take it away from Andujar, the level Klein and Pucinelli played was really poor.

This will be their fourth time facing each other. Andujar holds a 2-1 record, most recently in 2019 where he beat Sonego 3-0 at the US Open. Earlier that year, Sonego beat Andujar in straight sets in Cordoba.

Prediction

Andujar really struggled with Meligeni’s pace last weekend in the final, and facing Sonego in these conditions should make it even more difficult. Despite Sonego’s poor run of form, I still see this closer to 3.5 games with these odds.
