Shelton vs. van Rijthoven Prediction, Tips & Odds – Jul. 21, 2022 16:00 CET

Ben Shelton is taking the challenger world by storm recently, making the finals in the Rome US Challenger (losing out to Wu). Van Rijthoven is hoping to extend his relatively good form from the grass season after winning his first ATP title in his home country – beating Medvedev.

Ben Shelton
Ben Shelton, newly NCAA champion, came back to professional competitive tennis in June where he made the semi finals of the Little Rock Challenger, losing out to eventual champion Jason Kubler. More recently he had another deep run in the Challenger, where he lost to Wu 7-5 6-3.
The American has a great lefty serve which really troubles most of the players he’s been against. Although it is a low sample size, his hold percentage is an impressive 87.9%. His tennis IQ looks to be high, and to combine that with a player which holds so much power, is dangerous. I’m really looking forward to seeing him more this year, and should be getting a couple of wild cards to ATP tournaments.

Tim van Rijthoven
I’ve been watching the Dutchman for a while now, and for many who have watched him, he has a huge serving game. 2021 was the year where he started becoming a Challenger regular, though only making a challenger final once where he lost to Bonzi in Spain. It took the 2022 grass season for everyone to pay attention, where he won his home ATP tournament, beating Ebden, Fritz, Gaston, Auger Aliassime and Medvedev. He came to Wimbledon full of confidence, and got to the fourth round, taking a set of Djokovic.
With his big serving game, it’s sometimes difficult to see his weaknesses on grass. His most recent match against Evan Zhu, who served for the match in the second set, was a good example of his weaknesses showing. His backhand looked poor, and struggled to return Zhu’s serves. Though he will be hoping his serve can pull him through and break into the top 100 this week.

Prediction
Van Rijthoven is officially off his favourite surface, and faces an extremely talented Ben Shelton in the Indianapolis challenger. I have the American a lot shorter than the current odds suggest, so I’m more than happy to have a play on the money line for Shelton.
