Kvitova has had a decorative career, winning 29 WTA titles, including one this year at Eastbourne. Though she’s had a difficult year. She really struggled at the start, losing to Hon as a 1.12 favourite, then exiting in the first round of the Australian Open to Cirstea, and then Begu in Februrary at the Saint Petersburg WTA event… the list goes on! But fast forward to the grass season, and she finally managed to string some matches together where she won at Eastbourne.

Garcia made history yesterday, becoming the first ever WTA qualifier to make a final at Cincinnati. After a pretty rough three years, 2019-2021, Garcia decided to revert to her old ways and has become almost unplayable at times. It changed at Bad Homburg, where she won her first title since 2019, beting Andreescu in the final. She then reached the R16 of Wimbledon, and then a few weeks later claimed her second title of the year in Warsaw (where she beat Swiatek!).

She came through qualifiers in Cincinnati, beating ‘elite’ WTA players such as Sakkari, Mertens, Pegula and Sabalenka. Though it must be said, Sakkari, Mertens and Sabalenka haven’t looked great recently.

Prediction

Both players have been in elite form, but I would say that Kvitova has looked better than Garcia, and Kvitova’s top level is much higher than hers. I’ll be taking Kvitova ML here!
