Julia Grabher

Julia Grabher managed to get a Lucky Loser card into the main draw after losing to Jeanjean in the qualifications. She took advantage of this, beating X. Wang in straight sets, an impressive win. The German has become a more regular name on the WTA tour this year, most notably making the QF’s in both Istanbul and Valencia.

When looking at her results this year on clay, the main ones which stand out was her win against Teichmann in Istanbul (winning 6-4 6-4) and against Potapova in Valencia (winning 5-6 6-3 6-4). Though apart from this, her other wins have been against ITF level players. Though there isn’t any doubt she has the technical skill to be a good WTA tour player, she lacks the consistency and occasionally tennis IQ.

Nuria Parrizas-Diaz

2021 saw the year of Nuria Parrizas-Diaz. She won a total of 5 ITF’s and won 2 WTA titles (Bastad and Columbus). Unfortunately she’s struggled to take her form from last year to 2022, having a disappointing 18-18 win to loss ratio (compared to last years 53-17). Although she has struggled on clay this year, the players she’s lost too have been of high calibre (examples include Bondar, Alexandrova, Andreescu, Q. Zheng, Martic).

She had a scare in Round 1 this week, where Asia Muhammad, a doubles specialist, had one of her best serving days and took the first set 6-4. Nuria had to fight hard to win 4-6 7-5 7-5. That win was huge for her. A loss against Muhammad would have been one of her worst losses this year, and would have extended her run with no wins to six. Hopefully the comeback win will give her some extra confidence this week.

They faced each other earlier this year in Valencia, where Nuria Parrizas-Diaz won 7-5 6-2 on the clay.

Prediction

I can’t see the result being too different to the one just a couple months ago where Nuria won 7-5 6-2. She’s back on her favourite surface after a rough set of results on the grass, and her ability to place balls accurately with pace will make it very difficult for Grabher.
