Peter Gojowczyk
Last year, Peter Gojowczyk reached fourth round of the US Open where he was eliminated by Carlos Alcaraz in five sets. This was the best result at a grand slam in his career and thanks to that he maintained a good ranking. Gojowczyk played his best tennis in the period between 2017 and 2018, when he played three ATP finals and won one title in Marseille.
Not long after the excellent result at the US Open, Gojowczyk played semifinals of ATP tournament in Metz. There, he was defeated by Hubert Hurkacz and after that the worst period of his career began. Gojowczyk lost 11 consecutive matches and that losing streak was ended in Acapulco in February. He recorded four defeats in four matches on clay this year, while on grass he played below expectations as well.
Gojowczyk hopes to find solid form again on his favorite surface. He played some good matches on hard courts in last two weeks. In Atlanta, he defeated Ernesto Escobedo and Steve Johnson before losing to Adriano Mannarino. Gojowczyk hopes to continue with better performances in Washington.
Benoit Paire
Benoit Paire was considered as one of the most talented tennis players in world 15 years ago, but he never came close to maximum of his potential. He never reached quarterfinals at a Grand Slam, while he only played Masters semfinals in Rome back in 2013. So far, he won three titles in nine finals on the ATP tour.
Mental problems and psychological instability are the main reasons why Paire never reached top 10 on the ATP rankings. His outbursts are known to all tennis fans, and he few times talked about his problems. Paire has often made inappropriate statements to the media and he is generally considered as “bad boy” of the ATP Tour. This year, Paire is playing the weakest tennis in his career and wins are rare.
Paire played 21 matches on the ATP tour this season and achieved only three wins. Two of three wins came at the Australian Open in January. Currently, Paire is on a seven-game losing streak. This week in Atlanta he lost 2:0 (6-3, 6-1) against Jenson Brooksby.
