Sara Errani is a fascinating player, despite having no serve and not much power, she’s still being able to grind out impressive results at 35 years old. This is her 21st year of playing professional tennis, and she’s had some career so far considering her limitations to her game. She’s a former top five player in singles, and a former world number one in doubles too. She’s collected nine WTA single titles and 27 doubles titles, an extraordinary amount.
Though she may not be everyone’s cup of tea when it comes to her game, everyone has to appreciate how far she’s come. Now that she’s getting older, her ‘way’ of grinding is decreasing in ability and Rus will hope to take advantage of this.
That had everything! A visibly injured Kiki Bertens is subject to taunting, stare downs and some (pretty poor) underarm serves from Sara Errani. Doesn’t stop her though! Kiki wins 7-6 3-6 9-7 👏 #RolandGarros pic.twitter.com/SBNiZOxiPL— Six All in the Fifth (@six_all) September 30, 2020
Arantxa Rus has struggled this year, with her only real run coming in an ITF in Italy. Her record in comparison to last year is very poor, with 2021’s 32-10 to this year’s 15-9. The Romanian lost out to eventual champion Emma Navarro in an ITF the other week, a poor result, though, in hindsight, Navarro put in exceptional performances that week.
With Rus being in the bottom half of the draw in Warsaw, she will hope she can put up a run of form and get to the finals. Something she needs to be doing very soon.
Errani and Rus have faced each other four times, with Errani leading the H2H 4-1. Though the most recent match saw Rus win 4-6 7-6(4) 6-3 in Marbella earlier this year. Before that result, the last time they faced each other was in 2013.
I really think Rus should be beating Errani without too much of a problem. Errani’s rally tolerance is becoming less reliable which will be a huge problem in this match up. Rus was priced between 1.4-1.5 previously, and now it’s in the 1.7-8s. Admittedly, Errani has had the better form, but still have Rus the heavier favourite.
