Belinda Bencic has had a good year in 2022, winning one title in Charleston and getting close to a couple other titles – most notably in Miami and Berlin. She’s had good success in this event, winning the title in 2015 where she defeated six of the top 25 players in the world (including four of the top six).
She comes back, putting in very solid performances against Martincova and Serena Williams.
Muguruza has had a pretty shocking 2022. She currently holds a 9-12 record, losing to players she really shouldn’t be losing too. Her best wins this year have been against Tomljanovic (clay) and Alexandrova (hard).
Though she looked better this week against Kanepi, it’s still worrying times for Spaniard. She will be hoping to get some wins under her belt before the US Open.
The pair have faced each other twice, both times in Tokyo. Bencic won the first match, and Muguruza won the latest in 2018.
Bencic has looked so much better this year, and her serving has looked good this week. Muguruza will need to up her performance big time to beat Bencic. Happy to take the minus games here for the Swiss.
