Ajla Tomljanovic
The Australian had a tough start to the year, losing out to Kenin and Badosa twice and only beating Watson and Schmiedlova. She found her form again during the grass season, most notably making the Quarter Finals of Wimbledon (which unfortunately didn’t count for her ranking points this year). She’s now back in America for the hard courts and has started off well, beating Stephens in Washington but losing in the next round to eventual champion Samsonova. She qualified for Toronto, but lost in the second round to World Number One Iga Swiatek.
She’s hoping to qualify for another Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati, and after putting in a good performance in the first round, where she beat Clara Tauson in straight sets, she now faced Nuria Parrizas-Diaz.

Nuria Parrizas-Diaz
Nuria Parrizas-Diaz had a great season last year, going 53-17 for 2021. She won her first ever WTA title in Bastad, and then won another in Columbus (indoor hards). She also won 5 ITF’s that year.
However this year has been a different story. She’s struggled on her favourite surface at times this year, and looked very out of form on grass (admittedly not her favourite surface). She comes to Cincinnati for the first time, and after a convincing win over Kovinic, she’ll be hoping she can make a first time main draw appearance in this Masters event.

Nuria Parrizas-Diaz just has not looked great recently. She struggled in the first set against Cross in Toronto, and lost to Bucsa in straight sets in the following round. She had an impressive win over Kovinic, but that was to be expected. On the other side, Tomljanovic comes in with some good results from last week, beating Dart and Kudermetova before losing to Iga. These conditions will suit the Australian more, so happy to take the games.
