Calgary Flames vs Dallas Stars Prediction

The Dallas Stars leave their fortress in Texas and head out north over the border to take on the Flames in Calgary in one of the most interesting round 1 playoff series in the Western Conference. After a very unstable season, the Stars arrive to Canada as heavy underdogs against one of the best defenses in the league.

Calgary had a stellar season under the helm of their old head coach Darryl Sutter who returned for his second tenure after leaving in 2011. After years of struggles, he provided the spark they needed and turned their team into a title contender.

He was the mastermind behind their last big playoff push in 2004 when they took the Tampa Bay Lightning to game 7 of the Stanley Cup final. This year they´re hoping to go all the way and with the pieces they put together they have every right to be excited. Led by two MVP candidates in Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk, who both had a 100-point regular seasons, along with their reliable netminder Jacob Markstrom, the Flames look scarily good.

Dallas Stars

To say the Stars will have their work cut out for them in this series would be an understatement. They are behind the home team in almost all of the statistical categories with playoff experience being their only advantage. Throughout this year they were experiencing all sorts of problems and only managed to clinch a playoff berth with three games remaining in the regular season.

This matchup is about as lopsided as it gets in the NHL. The Stars have the worst away record out of all the playoff teams but did manage to beat the Flames once during the regular season on their ice. In the following two games they suffered two losses failing to match Calgary´s offensive production which should be the biggest issue for them in this series.

If Dallas want to have any chance of winning and pulling off an upset, they will have to be at a very high level defensively and keep the goals at a minimum. As expected Calgary are overwhelming favourites but all of the head-to-head games this season were very close. There is no value in betting on the hosts to win as the best option seems to be the Total Under with Dallas having no other way of keeping with the Flames other than trying to slow the game down.
