You might be thinking, this is a bit early for qualifying? Well Azerbaijan will be having its first sprint race weekend of the 2023 season. The sprint race is a shortened version of the grand prix, 100km of the circuit (which is 17 laps in Baku).  The new format of the sprint is slightly different compared to the previous format. On Saturday, we now have a Sprint Shootout and a Sprint Race instead of Practice 2 and a Sprint Race. It’s all a bit confusing, as we can see below!

Ferrari impress!

Charles Leclerc finished first in qualifying to be on pole yesterday, beating Verstappen and Perez who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Meanwhile Sainz finished an impressive 4th. I think Verstappen and Red Bull still has the upper hand, but this is a huge boost for Ferrari who need to secure some wins if they are to pile pressure on Red Bull.

Aston Martin impressive despite the DRS issue

Both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll said that the DRS issue was the reason for the mediocre qualifying result, with both finishing 6th and 9th respectively. Despite this, these are still impressive results and they have a great opporunity in the sprints to overtake their rivals.

⚠️ | Neither Aston Martin driver had DRS in Q3 – the issue from Free Practice returned.

They were losing about 10 kp/h on the main straight.
