Union Espanola

For more than three months, Union Espanola hasn’t lost a single game. That changed last week when they were defeated 1:0 by Palestino. In that match, Union Espanola was a much better team on the field, but they failed to score. Before that, they played eight matches without defeat, and in that time interval they achieved five wins and three draws.

In the last few seasons, Union Espanola has mostly been around mid-table in the Chilean Primera Division. In their matches, a large number of goals are often seen and they don’t strive for a defensive style of football, although this is how many clubs in Chile play. The best two players of Union Espanola are Uruguayan Rodrigo Pineiro and Argentine Leandro Garate. In the matches that this club wins, it rarely happens that one of the two mentioned attackers doesn’t score a goal.

This year, Union Espanola doesn’t have a single defeat at home in the Primera Division, although the opponent in this round will be one of the toughest possible. Because of this, the focus will have to be at the highest possible level.

Universidad Catolica

After Colo Colo and Universidad de Chile, Universidad Catolica is the third biggest club in Chile. In the last four seasons, they won four titles in total and represent a real force in the Primera Division. However, not everything is going according to plan for this team this season. In the domestic championship, they are in a very weak ninth place and it will be difficult for them to qualify for the continental competitions.

On Friday evening in Brazil, they lost 4:1 against Sao Paulo and thus were eliminated in the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana. Now, full focus will be on the domestic championship. The reason for the weak results this season is the disastrous road performances. Out of six games away from their stadium, they lost five times. They achieved their only road win at the beginning of the season in February when they beat weak Coquimbo 3:2.

One of the problems is the poor attacking performance of all players except Fernando Zampedri, who is the best scorer in the Primera Division with 12 goals. Universidad Catolica can still move up the table but they will have to start winning in a row, and this is an ideal opportunity for them to get a good result.

Although Universidad Catolica has dominated in Chile recently, they don’t have a good H2H against Union Espanola. In the last 13 head-to-head matches, Union Espanola won six times, drew five times, and Universidad Catolica triumphed only twice.

All players are available for both teams.

Union Espanola vs. Universidad Catolica Prediction

At Universidad Catolica’s away matches this year, four goals are scored on average per game. Union Espanola also likes an attacking style and we should expect to see a minimum of three goals here.
