PSV
Roger Schmidt did a solid job at PSV in previous two seasons, but the title stayed in Amsterdam both times. When he received an offer from Benfica, he didn’t think too much and moved to Portugal. PSV hired club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy instead. Former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker led Jong PSV last season and he is well familiar with the situation at PSV.
Van Nistelrooy hinted in the past few weeks that his coaching career could be great. In his debut match on PSV bench, his team defeated Ajax 5:3 in the Dutch Supercup. They were also convincing against Emmen (4:1) at the start of the Eredivisie, while in Monaco they achieved an active result (1:1) before the second leg in Eindhoven.
It’s crystal clear that Van Nistelrooy’s PSV will strive to play completely offensively in every match. Ritsu Doan, Eran Zahavi and Mario Gotze are no longer here, but signings of Guus Til, Luuk De Jong and Ki-Jan Hoever have strengthened this team. PSV won’t calculate and they will play to win against Monaco from the first minute, which promises a very interesting game.
Monaco
Monaco lost a spot in the Champions League group stage by conceding a goal in 95th minute against Lens in the Ligue 1 last round last season. Now, they will have to go through two qualifying rounds and they already have serious problems against PSV. The first leg ended 1:1, which means that Monaco must win in Eindhoven to qualify for the Champions League playoffs.
Aurelien Tchouameni signed for Real Madrid in June for 80 million euros. However, Monaco still didn’t find replacement for France national team member. Youngster Eliot Matazo filled that spot in midfield, while offensive positions has been boosted by the signings of Takumi Minamino and Breel Embolo.
Monaco didn’t lose official game since March when Strasbourg beat them. They are currently on an active streak of 13 matches without defeat. Since the arrival of Philippe Clement, the results have been very good, but visiting PSV will be perhaps the biggest test so far. Only win leads Monaco to the playoffs and everyone in the club wants to play in the Champions League during the fall.
H2H
In the first clash in this tie, it was 1:1 last week. Last season, PSV and Monaco played against each other in the Europa League group stage. In Eindhoven Monaco won 2:1, while at “Stade Louis II” the result was 0:0.
Injuries
Noni Madueke, Olivier Boscagli, Mauro Junior and Carlos Vinicius won’t play for PSV due to injuries. Benoit Badiashile is questionable for Monaco, while all other players are available.
PSV vs. Monaco Prediction
Regardless of draw in the first match, we should expect goals in return leg. PSV will play offensively from the start and they will look for a quick goal, which will leave plenty of space for Monaco to threaten them.
