Maribor
Maribor last appearance in the group stage of European competition was back in 2017. Everyone at the club believes it’s time to change that. Actually, it will be a real miracle if that isn’t the case. Maribor has a very good chance to play at least in the Europa League group stage in the fall, which would be a great result for them.
In the first round of the Champions League qualifying, Maribor eliminated Soligorsk. After there were no goals in first game in Slovenia, Maribor won the second leg by 2:0. Second leg was played in Turkey because continental football isn’t allowed in Belarus this season. Maribor used that as an advantage. They were in full control throughout entire game and deservedly advanced in next stage of competition.
After a big win in Turkey, head coach Radovan Karanovic decided to rest all starting players. In the opening round of the Slovenian League, he sent reserve players on the pitch and Maribor lost 3:0 against Radomlje. Karanovic decided to sacrifice that match in order to be fully prepared for the clash versus Sheriff, and we’ll see if it was the right move.
Sheriff
Sheriff made one of the biggest miracles in the Champions League history last season. First, they went through four rounds of qualifying, and then continued with shocking wins in the group stage. They beat Shakhtar Donetsk 2:0 in Moldova, and then went to Spain to celebrate against Real Madrid. Sheriff managed to finish third in their group where Inter was also, but then they were eliminated on penalties in the Europa League knockout stage by Braga.
After the end of amazing European adventure last season, that team were completely disbanded. All starting 11 players left the club, as well as head coach Yuri Vernydub. This is not a big news for Sheriff because they change a lot of players every season.
That they weren’t shaken by this moves, it was shown in the first round of Champions League qualifying. In two matches against Zrinjski, they were excellent defensively and didn’t concede a single goal. Maribor will certainly be a more difficult opponent than Bosnia and Herzegovina champions, but there is no doubt that Sheriff is able to eliminate them.
