Legia
Last season, Legia had one of the worst seasons in club’s history, although during last summer there was no indication that this would happen. In the Champions League, they passed two qualifying rounds, including win against Bodo/Glimt. After that, they eliminated Slavia Prague in the Europa League playoffs, so Legia reached groups in Europe for the first time in five years.
In the Polish League, it was completely different scenario. Legia even spent few rounds in relegation zone. Already in November, it was clear that there was no realistic chances for them to finish in top 3, so winning the Polish Cup was the only way for them to secure European football this season. That didn’t happen as Rakow beat them 1:0 in semifinals. In the end, Legia finished in tenth place in domestic league and thus for the first time since 2010, they are not playing in European qualifying.
Legia changed a lot of players during last two months. This club always aims to fight for the title, while top 3 and a spot in Europe is the bare minimum. Unfortunately for them, this season didn’t start well either. They collected just four points in three rounds and another bad result would set off the alarms again.
Piast
Since the moment they returned to the Polish League back in 2012, Piast has been a very stable first division team. They even qualified for European football on four occasions, and they went furthest two years ago. In 2020, Piast eliminated Dinamo Minsk and Hartberg in the Europa League qualifying rounds before losing to Copenhagen in third round.
Piast finished in fifth place last season and it was not easy for anyone to play against them. During this summer, they didn’t change squad almost at all and many players who played in the past period are still here. Waldemar Fornalik has been head coach since 2017 and he has the great trust of board management.
In the first two rounds, Piast suffered two defeats against Zaglebie and Jagiellonia, so they will have to urgently improve their form. Visiting Warsaw is probably the most difficult place to play in the entire league, but Piast can’t choose. It is up to them to do everything they can to achieve a positive result in order to escape from relegation zone as soon as possible.

Last season, Piast beat Legia on both occasions. It was 1:0 in Warsaw and 4:1 in Gliwice. Piast is on a streak of six matches without defeat in Warsaw. Legia’s last home win against Piast was in 2018.
