Five years have passed since Basel won the title in the Swiss Super League last time. For a club this caliber, that’s a long time. This summer, they hired Alex Frei, a legend of Swiss football, as their new head coach. He won the Challenge League with Winterthur last season, and they hope he will be able to help Basel as well.
However, the beginning of the season wasn’t convincing. Basel played against Winterthur on the road in the opening round and failed to win. In the second round of the Conference League qualifying, they defeated Crusaders 2:0 at home.
Basel, Young Boys, and reigning champions Zurich are expected to compete for the title in Switzerland this season. While failure on the road will be tolerated from time to time, Basel can’t allow themselves to drop points at home. Servette
In 2019, Servette was promoted to the Swiss Super League, and already in the first season, they ensured an appearance in Europe. They did it again a year later, but both trips to Europe were unsuccessful. In 2020 they were eliminated by Reims in the Europa League qualifying, and in 2021 by Molde in the Conference League qualifying.
Last season they finished in sixth place in the domestic league, and the same is predicted for them this season as well. During the summer, Servette didn’t change many players. They sold Roggeri Nyakossi to Marseille for two million euros, while Vincent Saso’s contract expired, and he went to Boavista. Of the new players, Servette signed winger Patrick Pflucke and center back Baba Souare. As already mentioned, the ambition of this club is to stay in the first tier above all else.
In the first round, they won 1:0 against St. Gallen at home. Already in the fifth minute, Ronny Rodelin scored a magnificent goal, and Servette then played ultra defensively and managed to save the result. Last season, Servette was the third-worst defense in the league, and according to the opening round, they seem to have improved in that segment.
