Barnsley Team News
Barnsley was relegated from Championship last season and they changed the team quite a lot. They signed seven new players with an average age of 23 years and this team will be very interesting to watch. They have good players and they can attack a place in the top 6 and playoffs.
Barnsley changed manager too at the end of the season and they appointed former Cheltenham Town boss Michael Duff who has done an incredible job with Cheltenham Town in the past two seasons.
Throughout his career, Duff played with 3-5-2 and the tactics he implement in the Barnsley squad. In the opening round, Barnsley suffered defeat at Plymouth which is not too bad because Plymouth is one of the favourites for the title. Barnsley created a lot of chances in that game and maybe they deserve a point.
During the week, Barnsley signs a young and promising striker Slobodan Tedic and Duff say that he wants to sign one or two more strikers.
Cheltenham Town Team News
Last season Cheltenham Town finished the season in safe 15th place. They were relegation candidates before the season started but with Michael Duff and a fantastic scorer in Alfie May, they stay in this league quite easy.
This season the story will be much different. Michael Duff leaves for Barnsley, and the captain Will Boyle also leaves, with a couple of key players. The Robins signed a lot of players but it seems like they a weaker than last season and they are a bigger favourite for relegation now than the last season.
In the first round, they lose to Peterborough 3-2 and that will be a major problem for this club – defence. Last season Cheltenham conceded 80 goals and only four clubs conceded more. The defence is weaker this season and the new manager Wade Elliott will have a very tough job.
The last time they were meeting each other was in the 2002/03 season. Barnsley won at Cheltenham 3-1 and at Oakwell was 1-1.
Team News and Injuries
Barnsley: Herbie Kane and Michal Helik are out. Josh Benson and Matty Wolfe are both doubts.
Cheltenham: Matty Blair is out.
Barnsley vs. Cheltenham Town Prediction
We think that Barnsley must exploit Cheltenham’s weaknesses in defence and go for three points here. This will be an emotional day for Barnsley boss Michael Duff but he has a much better team and this is a great chance to win three points.
Cheltenham had one of the worst defences in League One last season and that problem will be the same this season.
Prediction: Barnsley to score over 1.5 goal
