Anderlecht’s last appearance in the group stage of European competition was in 2018 and now they are very close to ending that negative streak. They achieved a 1:0 win in Bern against Young Boys and if they at least draw in Brussels, they will qualify for the Conference League group stage.
There were many problems within the club in previous years. Things started to change for the better and now they are close to finally playing European football in the fall. During this summer, Fabio Silva signed on loan from Wolves and showed already all his magnificent talent. Anderlecht will also try to join title hunt in the Jupier League and time will tell how realistic is that.
Regardless of the win in Bern, Anderlecht will have to play another outstanding match to advance. Young Boys is not a naive opponent and they will take advantage of any Anderlecht relaxation. It should be mentioned that since this summer the head coach of Anderlecht is Felice Mazzu. With Royale Union SG and Chaleroi, he produced outstanding results in the past decade.
Between 2018 and 2021, Young Boys won four consecutive titles in Switzerland. This helped them in Europe as well, as they achieved several notable results there. They participated twice in the Champions League group stage and in 2021 they played in the Europa League round of 16 where Ajax eliminated them.
Last season, Young Boys didn’t live up to expectations. Hiring David Wagner as head coach turned out to be a flop and it cost them the title. This club was also very unlucky in draw for the Conference League playoffs. They were paired up with Anderlecht, one of the best unseeded clubs. This was also shown in the first leg, which Young Boys lost 1:0 at home. Now, they will need a big win in Brussels to advance to the group stage.
Young Boys certainly believe they can make a comeback. They had a great start in the Swiss Super League collecting 11 points in five rounds and they also played well in Europe. Quite simply, Anderlecht is a quality opponent, but there have been bigger surprises, so nothing is impossible.
Young Boys and Anderlecht played first time against each other last week when the Belgian club won 1:0 in Bern.
Majeed Ashimeru, Adrien Trebel and Lior Rafaelov are injured and are unlikely to play for Anderlecht. Several players are unavailable for Young Boys. Christian Fassnacht, Cheikh Niasse and Sandro Lauper are injured, while Felix Mambimbi and Meschack Elia didn’t practice due to ill, but both of them should be at least on the bench.
Anderlecht vs. Young Boys Prediction
Considering the result from first leg, Young Boys have nothing to wait for. They will play offensively from the start and that will open up space on both sides. All this guarantees few goals, and we expect to see at least one in both nets.
