England vs Argentina: Best Betting Odds

Match Preview

England

England needed extra time to see off Norway in the quarter-final, winning 2-1 courtesy of a Jude Bellingham brace after Erling Haaland had cancelled out an early lead in normal time. It was a tense, physical contest and England were made to work for every minute of it. Before that came arguably their toughest test of the tournament: a 3-2 win away to Mexico in the last 16, played with ten men for the final 36 minutes after Jarell Quansah’s red card, and only settled after Harry Kane’s penalty put them two clear before Mexico pulled one back late. England’s final group game was more comfortable – a 2-0 win over Panama, with Bellingham and Kane both scoring in the second half after a goalless, frustrating opening period. Across those three matches England have needed the second half or extra time to find their breakthrough each time. Kane is now England’s all-time record World Cup scorer, and Bellingham has scored in back-to-back knockout matches – the first England player to manage that since Diego Maradona in 1986.

Argentina

Argentina also needed extra time in the quarter-final, beating a ten-man Switzerland 3-1 courtesy of a stunning Julián Álvarez strike from 25 yards and a late Lautaro Martínez goal, after Switzerland had forced extra time with a stoppage-time leveller. It was Argentina’s twelfth straight World Cup win. The last 16 was even more dramatic: Argentina trailed Egypt 2-0 with 11 minutes left before scoring three times in thirteen frantic minutes, with Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernández all finding the net to complete one of the great comebacks of the tournament. Messi missed a penalty earlier in that game but still finished it with his 21st World Cup goal, extending his own all-time record. Argentina’s final group match was a comfortable 3-1 win over Jordan, with Lautaro Martínez and Giovani Lo Celso both scoring their first World Cup goals as Messi came off the bench to score yet again. Across their last three matches Argentina have scored nine goals but also conceded five, twice needing late goals to get out of trouble.

Head-to-Head

England and Argentina haven’t met at a World Cup since 2002, when David Beckham’s penalty settled a tense group game. The rivalry runs deeper than most at this tournament, from the Hand of God in 1986 to Beckham’s red card in 1998, and England have actually won three of their five World Cup meetings with Argentina. None of that history is likely to count for much once kickoff comes, given how both teams have arrived at this stage.

England vs Argentina: Prediction & Betting Tips

  • Between England’s and Argentina’s last three matches apiece, both teams scored in five of the six games – Panama’s 0-2 defeat is the only one where a side failed to trouble the scoresheet.
  • Argentina have conceded in each of their last three matches despite winning all of them, while England needed extra time or a second-half turnaround in every knockout game so far.
  • With Messi, Kane and Bellingham all in red-hot form and both defences showing cracks under pressure, a clean sheet from either side looks unlikely.
