Match Preview

After a problematic stretch in which they were practically playing without a true center because of numerous injuries to their big men, Panathinaikos have clicked into top form and are riding a six-game winning streak in all competitions. In the EuroLeague specifically, they have put together three consecutive victories – away to Paris (101–95) and Real Madrid (87–77), and at home against Dubai (103–82). The Greek giants now sit at 8–4 in the continent’s premier competition.

The arrival of Kenneth Faried has completely changed the face of this Panathinaikos team, something head coach Ergin Ataman has emphasized several times. The former NBA big man and USA international has fit seamlessly into the Athens side, but a lot of credit also goes to the backcourt, which is playing better and better – starting with the experienced Kostas Sloukas, who is averaging almost seven assists over the last three EuroLeague games. Highly-paid guard T.J. Shorts has also raised his level; he was their best player against Real Madrid with 19 points and six assists. Ultimately, though, this is Kendrick Nunn’s team: when he performs at his usual standard, Panathinaikos become extremely hard to beat. Against Dubai he posted 22 points along with four rebounds and four assists, and was one of the main architects of the remarkable 26–1 run that the Greeks put together between the end of the third and the start of the fourth quarter. The visitors never recovered from that punch, while Panathinaikos built a huge cushion and cruised to the finish.

The only cloud over that performance was Cedi Osman’s injury in the first quarter – the Turkish international did not return to the floor and also missed the weekend league game. Panathinaikos are clearly riding a wave right now, as underlined by the fact that they own the second-best offense in the competition, and with the stands expected to be full for the visit of Partizan, anything other than an extension of this positive run would be a big surprise.

Partizan, on the other hand, are in a deep crisis in terms of both performances and results, a slump closely linked to some questionable roster decisions and injuries to key players. The black-and-whites did manage to beat Monaco at home, 78–76, but then followed that up with two more EuroLeague defeats. First they allowed a heavily depleted Asvel side to come into Belgrade and beat them 88–87, and then they were comfortably outplayed by Fenerbahce on their own floor, 99–87. Their current EuroLeague record stands at 4–8.

When you start listing Partizan’s problems, it is hard to know where to begin. In the summer they were late in bringing in a center, and the injury to their best player, Carlik Jones, dealt another huge blow. From that moment on, the Belgrade side have struggled badly to organize their offense and find good solutions, especially in tight finishes. While their defense was functioning at a high level – as in the games against Olympiacos, Barcelona and Monaco – they were either very close to wins or actually managing to pick up victories. Over the last two rounds, however, everything has collapsed: Partizan allowed the worst offense in the EuroLeague (Asvel) to score 88 points on them, and then, in front of 20,000 of their own fans, they conceded 99 points to what had been the third-weakest attack in the league (Fenerbahce).

In both of those games Partizan started disastrously, falling behind 2–16 to Asvel and 2–17 to Fenerbahce, and what makes it even more surprising is that they opened both contests with almost the same starting five. Statistically, they now own the fifth-worst offense and the third-worst defense in the competition, so these kinds of results should not come as a shock. On top of that, Željko Obradović is facing serious issues with the health of his roster: players are missing games more and more often, and in several recent outings he has been without Vanja Marinković and Arijan Lakić, while, according to the legendary coach, Shake Milton has been playing through problems. Then there is the Jabari Parker situation; he clearly has not fitted into Partizan’s system and way of functioning, has missed the last two games for a variety of reasons, and many fans feel that it would hardly be a loss if he had been absent from some earlier ones as well.

From a betting perspective, the line of +11 on Partizan in the Asian handicap market looks slightly exaggerated given the context of this matchup. Even though the Belgrade side are in a poor run, they have already shown in games against Olympiacos, Barcelona and Monaco that, when the defensive intensity is right, they can stay close to the very best teams in Europe. After two painful defeats and heavy criticism, a reaction in terms of focus and physical engagement is to be expected, and double-digit underdogs often cover when they enter the game with a “nothing to lose” mentality. Panathinaikos are flying, but they are coming off emotionally and physically demanding wins and are still dealing with rotation issues and potential absences, which could open the door for a small drop in energy and concentration. In such a scenario, even if the hosts eventually secure another victory, Partizan have enough offensive quality to keep the margin within single digits and make +11 a very playable option.
