Norrkoping is a two-time consecutive winner of the Swedish championship. This will be their first appearance in European competition since 2013 when they participated in the Baltic League. In the 2011/12 season. they tried to qualify for the Eurocup but were already defeated by Oostende in the qualifiers.
Norrkoping’s roster changed significantly over the summer. The three most important players left the club, Jackson Rowe, Brandon Tabb, and Felix Terins, who together scored about 47 points per game. The three of them took advantage of their good season and found bigger clubs where they would continue their careers.
As their replacements, former Real Betis wing center Nick Spiers, short winger Zach Thomas from the Finnish Bisons, and talented Weber State University guard Koby McEwen were brought in. This trio played well in the pre-season and it is likely that Norrkoping’s display in this game will depend a lot on their performance.
Ten years ago, Budivelnyk was a serious basketball project. They played in the quarterfinals of the Eurocup, were part of the Euroleague for one season, and famous players like Darjus Lavrinovic and Malcolm Delaney wore this club’s jersey. However, the club fell into major financial problems and did not compete in the period from 2018 to 2020.
Budivelnyk is now on a new start, and they finished in second place the previous season, which was interrupted due to the war. Then they trusted in the quality of the back trio Gian Clavel – Jerome Randle – Archie Goodwin. The first two left, and the last one will play for this Ukrainian club this season.
Apart from him, among the players who played last season, there is still the American center Alec Brown, who previously played in the ACB league, as well as the Ukrainian national team member and participant in this year’s Eurobasket, Bogdan Blyznyuk.
The loudest reinforcement that arrived at the club this summer is Jerai Grant. He played brilliantly for Promitheas last season, averaging 12.8 points in 17 games in this competition.
These two teams have never played against each other before.
We are of the opinion that Budivelnyk has a stronger roster, and more quality and experienced individuals. The Ukrainian league is stronger than the Swedish league, and we believe that their representative will show it on the floor as well.
Prediction: Budivelnyk -9.5HC (OT included)
