New Zealand Breakers Team News
The New Zealand Breakers were last season´s biggest disappointment. Coach Dan Shamir overhauled the entire roster and injected a lot of youth, but it at all went downhill quickly. Even before the season started the Breakers were hit with an all-out covid infection, which beheaded their team and affected their form.
As the season progressed, they showed no signs of improvement and in the end deservedly finished at the bottom with an abysmal 5-23 record. After winning four titles between 2011 and 2015, this off-season the Breakers did everything in their power to stop the bleeding and finally make the playoffs.
After missing the postseason for four consecutive years, the Breakers laid new foundation by appointing Mody Maor as the new head coach. His roster will be spearheaded by the domestic core of Tom Vodanovich, Sam Timmins and Robert Loe but the most of the scoring is expected to come from the new imports Jarrell Brantley, Dererk Pardon and Barry Brown.
Illawarra Hawks Team News
The Hawks showed a glimpse of what we can expect from them this season in their opening Blitz game. Melbourne lost a key piece in Matthew Dellavedova this summer but still had a formidable lineup for the clash with Illawarra. However, the Hawks took control in the first half and never looked back. Their lead continued to grow in the second half and in the end they came away with an impressive 81:68 win.
The trio of Harvey, Froling and Robinson combined for 41 points and 17 rebounds. Some journalists are already calling them the new big-three but they only played together in one game. It´s still too early to tell if the Hawks will be a serious contender, although with their long bench and experience, they have all the necessary ingredients to win their first title after 2001.
New Zealand Breakers vs. Illawarra Hawks Prediction
The Breakers have already beaten the Hawks twice this preseason. Ten days ago the Breakers won a hard-fought match after overtime, but not a lot of people know they also met two days prior to that game. It was a closed-door scrimmage which the Breakers won by almost 30 points with Barry Brown scoring 26 points.
We think the bookmakers are underestimating the Breakers so we will back New Zealand to cover the spread.
