Eurobasket Group D

According to many basketball experts, the weakest group at the upcoming Eurobasket is group D. All matches will be played in Prague, and apart from the host Czech Republic, Serbia, Finland, Poland, the Netherlands, and Israel are also participating. Serbia is expected to finish in first place, but there have been some big surprises at the previous European Championships.

SERBIA

Key players

Nikola Jokic is the absolute leader of the Serbian national team. He comes to this Eurobasket as a two-time consecutive NBA MVP and this will be his first competition since the 2019 World Cup. He showed that he is hungry for success and played great in the Mundobasket qualifiers against Greece and Turkey. Joker scored 29 points against the Greeks, and 24 against the Turks and announced that he will be the main candidate for MVP in the upcoming tournament.

Apart from him, there is Vasilije Miciฤ, one of the best Euroleague playmakers in the past few years. He won the Euroleague title two years in a row and will be Jokic’s main assistant. This Serbian roster is loaded with experienced and established players, such as Vladimir Lucic, Nikola Kalinic, and Nikola Milutinov, so they are among the main contenders for the gold medal.

Current form

As we mentioned, Serbia defeated Greece 100-94 and Turkey 79-72 in the qualifiers, so they come to the Czech Republic full of optimism. Svetislav Pesic knows how to adjust the form of his players since he won the Eurobasket twice as a coach and surely his experience will be of great importance on the way to a medal.

Expectations

Serbia should finish the group stage with five wins because it is much better than all its rivals on paper. Many consider them the biggest favorites to win the gold medal, and we believe that we will see them on the podium.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Key players

Tomas Satoransky should be the key player for the Czech Republic in this tournament, but his participation is uncertain. He was injured during the preparations and missed both qualifying matches. It has not yet been decided whether the best player on this national team will be ready to lead his teammates. He was the main reason for the good performance of the Czechs in the previous competitions and it will be a great shame if he does not recover for Eurobasket.

Apart from him, Jan Vesely is the biggest name on this roster. The former basketball player of Fenerbahce and the new reinforcement of Barcelona has been one of the best centers in the Euroleague for a long time. The results of the Czech Republic will depend a lot on his form in this tournament, especially if Satoransky drops out. We should also mention Vito Krejci, a young player of the Oklahoma City Thunder, as well as Ondrej Balvin, an experienced center.

Current form

Without Satoransky, the Czechs suffered both defeats in the World Cup qualifiers. The French demolished them 60-95, while they suffered a narrow defeat from the Hungarians 79-82. Before that, they played great in friendly matches, which is another indicator of how important Satoransky is for the success of this national team.

Expectations

The hosts have a continuity of good results in the biggest competitions. They finished sixth at the World Championships three years ago, while they finished ninth at the Tokyo Olympics last year. If Satoransky stays healthy, they will be a dangerous opponent for anyone. Without him, their highest reach is the round of 16.

FINLAND

Key players

Lauri Markkanen is by far the best and loudest basketball player in Finland. The power forward of the Cleveland Cavaliers will be the leader of this national team at Eurobasket and there is no doubt that his form will directly affect the results and ranking of this national team. He was the most effective player in the victories over Finland and Estonia in the qualifying matches this August. He scored 28 points against Israel and 18 points against Estonia.

Next to him, there is experienced shooter Sasu Salin, who plays for Tenerife, as well as the forward of AEK Athens, Alexander Madsen.

Current form

As we mentioned, the Finns beat Israel 79-73 as hosts and Estonia 76-68 as guests. They have thus taken a big step towards the World Championship, which will be held next year. In addition, they have strengthened their confidence for the upcoming Eurobasket, so they come to the Czech Republic with the intention of continuing a series of positive results.

Expectations

Lauri Markkanen will probably be one of the best scorers of the entire tournament, and whether that will be enough for Finland to achieve a few victories remains to be seen. We believe that they can pass the group stage. Anything beyond that will be a big surprise.

POLAND

Key players

The main strength of the Poles at this European Championship will be Mateusz Ponitka, AJ Slaughter, and Aleksander Balcerowski. Ponitka is the captain of this team and the most experienced player, and he always plays well for the national team. He scored 26 points in a narrow loss against Croatia in the Eurobasket 2025 qualifiers and was also one of the best players in a convincing win against Austria.

AJ Slaughter will be in charge of organizing the game, while the biggest force under the hoop will be young Balcerowski, who is predicted to have a bright future. There is also Michal Sokolowski, who has been known to play well for his national team in the past.

Current form

The Poles suffered a fiasco in the qualifiers for the World Championship that will be held next year, so they are fully committed to making a good result at this Eurobasket. Their form fluctuated in the preparatory matches, as well as in the qualifying matches for the next European Championship. We will see how they will look in the Czech Republic.

Expectations

We believe that Poland is good enough to qualify for the next stage. They participated in the quarter-finals of the last World Cup, and the key players are still there. The round of 16 is their limit.

ISRAEL

Key players

Deni Avdija, a player of the Washington Wizards, will be the leader of the young Israeli national team. He is constantly improving as a player year after year and it will not be a surprise if he gets a bigger role at his club next season. Apart from him, there is Partizan playmaker Yam Madar, as well as forwards from Maccabi and Alba, Roman Sorkin, and Yovel Zoosman.

This national team is one of the most talented in the tournament, but they will demonstrate their full potential at a future competition since they are still inexperienced.

Current form

The Israelis were defeated in both qualifying matches in August. They lost to Finland and Sweden, which is another indication that this roster is still immature.

Expectations

We assume that this national team will play some very good matches in this tournament. It is difficult to predict whether this will be enough to record a victory and possibly secure placement in the next phase.

NETHERLANDS

Key players

Yannick Franke, Worthy De Jong, and Charlon Kloof are the leaders of this national team. They play for PAOK, Leiden, and Porto, so it can be concluded from this how strong this national team is. That is, how weak they really are. This trio was the most effective in the qualifiers for the World Cup, so they will probably dedicate a lot of energy to offense at the upcoming Eurobasket.

Current form

The Dutch experienced two defeats by double digits in the qualifiers for Mundobasket. The Georgians defeated them 77-66, and the Spaniards were even more convincing 86-64. Therefore, it cannot be said that they come to this tournament in a good mood.

Expectations

Anything but the elimination of the Netherlands in the preliminary stage will be a huge surprise. If they want to advance to the knockout stage, they will have to win two matches, and we really don’t see how they can do that.

PREDICTION

  1. Serbia
  2. Czech Republic
  3. Poland
  4. Finland
  5. Israel
  6. Netherlands

We believe that Serbia is the best team in this group and that they will finish this stage without defeat. If Satoransky does not play, the Czechs will struggle hard against all teams, but we believe that they, along with the Poles and Finns, will make it to the round of 16.
