Canterbury vs. Wellington

A desperate Saints side visits the Canterbury Rams in an attempt to finally get going after their first win of the season last Sunday. Even though the Wellington Saints are the current title holders, their poor results and ninth place don´t come as surprise because they have been going through a lot of changes this season. The Rams didn’t have a lot of roster issues at the start and currently sit in fourth place right below the league´s main title favourites.

Canterbury Rams

In difference to the majority of the teams, the Rams had plenty of firepower in their opener taking down a very limited Otago Nuggets side. They remained consistent and achieved some notable wins but they are yet to beat a top team. Canterbury already visited the Saints couple of rounds ago and achieved a big win in Wellington(95:89). Wellington was still without its best player, Xavier Cooks, and got outrebounded and outhustled in that game despite holding a lead in the middle of the third quarter.

The Rams suffered a heartbreaking loss in their last game against the Bay Hawks at home losing the game at the buzzer. Having already beaten the Saints this season, they are definitely looking to heal their wounds this Saturday but it will be extremely tough. The main reason for that will the absence of their newest reinforcement from the Aussie NBL, Matur Maker. He has been dominating for his new team after he debuted couple of games ago and will be a big miss because of his rebounding ability.

In addition, the Rams might also be without a couple of other key pieces because three of their starters, Joe Cook-Green, Max Darling and American import Ryan Taylor, are all questionable.

Wellington Saints

It is not a coincidence the reigning champions are massively underperforming. Not a lot is left from their last year´s roster as their biggest problem at the moment is the lack of size.

They brought in a new coach who had a very tough opening game with only local players available and got absolutely destroyed by the Southland Sharks(117:81). Afterwards the Saints started bringing in some new players but simply couldn´t buy a win. They finally broke the duck last week when they took down the Manawatu Jets at home(97:88) and hope to win again led by their newest signing from the Aussie NBL, Xavier Cooks.

After an MVP season and winning the title with the Sydney Kings, he arrives as the saviour and joins his fellow teammate from the Kings Tom Vodanovich. With him in the lineup they have to turn things around as quickly as possible because their poor start has them sitting way outside the playoff zone.

Canterbury Rams vs Wellington Saints Prediction

Expectations will be high with Cooks debuting and the Saints won´t get a better chance than this one to win away from home against the incomplete Rams team. Bookmakers consider this game to be a 50-50 but we think the Saints should have an advantage and will back them to win including overtime.
