UFC Fight Night 206

After getting two new/old champions last weekend, the UFC is back at its Apex Forum in Nevada. This time the event will be led by a welter fight between Luque and Muhammad, and this is their second match. They first took place six years ago, and now finally their paths cross again.

Vicente Luque vs Belal Muhammad

A fight between the fifth and sixth ranked fighters of the welter division. Two guys who are making a little longer and harder way to the very top. The first match between the two guys was held at the very beginning of their UFC careers, in 2016, when Luque won by knockout in the first round. In the last six years, they made serious progress in UFC. Both have done 12 fights, and Luque has a score of 10-2, while Belal has a 10-1-1.

Luque is a guy with Latino roots, as he grew up in Brazil, where he also became a BJJ master, and currently trains in Sanford MMA, along with Usman and Burns. His fighting style is straightforward, holding the middle of the cage and throwing great hand techniques. He had a couple of excellent knockouts during his UFC career, one of which was against Muhammad. It should be noted that Vincente trains in Sanford with the best stand-up coach in MMA, so it’s no wonder that Luque is a great stand-up fighter. Interestingly, in his last two fights, he has shown a great usage of BJJ, with two D’Arce chokes he finished Chiesa and Woodley, both in the first round.

Muhammad is a guy you don’t want to see across from yourself in the octagon. A guy who is physically strong, and fit, perhaps the only fighter who can match Covington. The last match against Wonderboy Thompson best captures what we are talking about. Wonderboy, who is a master of distance and control in the stand, could not match Belal’s pressure and wrestling, and control on the floor. Belal is one of the fighters who has the most wins on a decision in his career! His biggest weapon is certainly that control on the floor. Luque has shown what the recipe is against Muhammad in match number 1, but if Belal knocks him on his back, and starts spending and bothering 5 rounds, Luque will be in trouble.
